Privacy Policy for Roam
Roam is a travel tracking app that helps users keep a list of visited countries, view them on a world map, and optionally compare travel progress with friends.
This Privacy Policy explains what information Roam processes, how that information is used, and what choices users have.
1. Information We Process
1. Visited countries
The app stores the list of countries you mark as visited, together with the date a country was added.
2. Photo library data (optional)
If you grant permission, Roam can scan photos in your library to detect countries based on photo location metadata. This scanning is performed on your device. Roam does not upload your photos themselves to the developer.
3. iCloud / CloudKit sharing data (optional)
If you choose to use the friends-sharing feature, Roam stores a travel profile in Apple CloudKit associated with your iCloud account. This shared profile may include:
- your visited country codes,
- the total number of visited countries,
- created/updated timestamps for the profile.
This information is shared only when you explicitly enable sharing and only with recipients you choose through Apple’s system sharing interface.
4. Local friend aliases
If you assign custom names to shared friends inside the app, those aliases are stored locally on your device.
2. How We Use Information
Roam uses information only to provide the app’s core features, including:
- saving and displaying your visited countries,
- importing countries from photo metadata when you grant photo access,
- showing your countries on the map,
- syncing and sharing your travel profile with selected friends through iCloud/CloudKit,
- displaying friend comparisons and leaderboards based on shared country lists.
3. Data Storage
Roam stores data in the following places:
On your device:
visited countries, scan checkpoints, and custom friend aliases may be stored locally on your device using Apple system storage.
In your iCloud account:
if you enable the social sharing feature, your shared travel profile is stored through Apple CloudKit in connection with your iCloud account.
4. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data.
We do not share your data with advertisers or third-party analytics providers.
Roam shares your data only in the following cases:
- with Apple, to provide iCloud / CloudKit functionality you choose to use;
- with people you explicitly invite or approve through Apple’s sharing flow for the friends feature.
5. Photo Access
Roam requests photo library access only to analyze photo location metadata and help identify countries you may have visited.
Roam is not intended to upload or sell your photos. Photo scanning is used only to support the country-detection feature.
You can deny or revoke photo access at any time in your device settings.
6. Tracking and Analytics
Roam does not use third-party advertising SDKs.
Roam does not track you across apps or websites.
Roam does not use third-party analytics or marketing trackers, based on the current version of the app.
7. Data Retention and Deletion
Local app data remains on your device until you delete it in the app or remove the app from your device, subject to Apple backup behavior.
If you enable CloudKit sharing, the shared travel profile remains in your iCloud/CloudKit storage until it is changed, sharing is stopped, or it is otherwise removed through Apple’s systems.
You can:
- remove visited countries inside the app,
- revoke photo access in iOS Settings,
- stop sharing your CloudKit profile through Apple’s sharing interface,
- remove the app from your device.
8. Children’s Privacy
Roam is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
9. Third-Party Services
Roam uses Apple services where needed to provide app functionality, including:
- Photos framework,
- iCloud / CloudKit,
- system sharing features.
Those Apple services are governed by Apple’s own terms and privacy policies.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any updates will be reflected in a new version of the policy and, where required, through an app update.
